America was built on the idea religious and civic community. The American identity was born long before the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted.  It was the religious leaders that, through churches kept the colonies together and built what we know now as representative democracy.

For this you have every inducement of sympathy and interest. Citizens by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections.
