On Thursday, the United State Senate passed a sweeping bipartisan Immigration Bill S.744. The Bill passed with support from 16 Republican senators led by Sen. Marco Rubio. The Bill now goes to the House of Representatives where Speaker John Boehner has stated that the House will work on its own Immigration Bill. The House Judiciary this week passed another of a series Immigration bills.
Coincidently, this week the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled that The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional, and thereby, validating same-sex marriage in California where voters passed Prop. 8 banning gay marriage. SCOTUS ruled that states have no legal right to ban same-sex marriage. This could be a challenge for Texas where same-sex marriage is legally banned. What SCOTUS ruled this week only argues that states cannot ban same-sex marriage for the purpose of federal benefits.
This week also, In Texas, Sen. Wendy Davis staged an eleventh-hour filibuster against a pro-life legislation, and thereby, successfully defeating pro-life Senate Bill 5. Two weeks ago, House of Representative passed a law to extend protection to the “unborn.” The Republican-led House voted to impose the strictest new limits on abortion in a decade, the bill, which would ban abortion after a fetus is 20 weeks old, a ban on most after 20 weeks of pregnancy and stricter standards for abortion clinics. But this bill is meaningless since the U.S. Senate will not take it into consideration. The bill passed by the House is similar to Texas Senate Bill 5.
Therefore, conservative cannot change federal laws with only a majority in the House; Conservatives need a majority in the Senate as well. Republican majority in the U.S. Senate could make it possible for Congress to clarify the meaning of marriage. in addition, conservatives need a Republican in the White House and Supreme Court justices that will want to overturn Roe v. Wade.
But conservative can only gain this majority in Congress and the White House by bringing in Latino voters. Bringing in Latino voters will makes it possible for Republicans to take back the Senate and Latinos will help to win the White House with a Republican President that can appoint more conservative judge to Supreme Court that could overturn Rove v. Wade.
However, Latinos voter are very disillusioned with conservatives due to the “tone” used on the Immigration debate. The “tone” keeps pushing Latino away, even if they are pro-life and oppose same-sex marriage. Thus, before any majority can be gained in Congress conservative need to help Speaker Boehner pass an immigration bill in the House, and thereby, bringing in Latino voters to help build a large coalition to gain the necessary majority to stop a liberal agenda on abortion and traditional marriage.
Thus, Latino and social conservative need to come together and ask Speaker Boehner to bring an Immigration bill to the Floor. A Republican Immigration bill in the House will create a bigger coalition of social conservatives that can a elect a pro-life President in 2016. So help us in asking Speaker Boehner to bring a immigration bill to the Floor of the House of Representatives. Help Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan and Speaker Boehenr build a conservative winning collation that can stop a liberal agenda in Congress and the Supreme Court.
The filibuster in Texas and ruling by SCOTUS underscores the urgency to build a bigger conservative coalition.
