Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Customs and Border Patrol officials testified on ways to respond to the influx of unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America across the U.S.-Mexico border. Since October 2013, more than 52,000 children from Central America had been apprehended by CBP. DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said he would consider every conceivable lawful option to deal with the problem. Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-TX) said that Obama administration immigration policies had contributed to the problem and urged that the National Guard be sent to the Southwest border.
